It's Not A Put Down. I Put My Foot Down.

Quick Hitters and Random Thoughts

--You can’t give the Packers enough credit for this season. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team overcome more injuries to make it to the Super Bowl, much less win it.

--Aaron Rodgers joined the Super Bowl 300-yard, 3 TD, 0 INT club that already included Joe Montana, Steve Young, and Jake Delhomme?!

--The commercials were abysmal and I don’t toss the word “abysmal” around a lot (mostly because “sucks” is an easier, go-to adjective). They lacked humor, coherence, wit, intelligence and/or Mila Kunis. And we could all use a little more Mila Kunis in our lives. Really forgettable stuff (looking at you GoDaddy and Groupon). Though not more forgettable than The Black Eyed Peas at the half or Christina Aguilera’s "National Anthem," but pretty forgettable nonetheless. And good God, it seemed like both of those “performances” went on forever. At least I think The Black Eyed Peas got the words to their songs right. Clearly that was too much to ask from Christina. Pretty sad for Christina that’d right now you’d rather have stock in Britney Spears.

--I finally saw The Fighter and while the cast was pretty good the movie as a whole was just kind of all right to me. Maybe it was because I went in knowing so much about Micky Ward and his career. Maybe it was because Hollywood took liberties with his career path. Maybe it was because Micky Ward was put on the map in his wars with Arturo Gatti and that epic trilogy was reduced to a blurb at the end of the movie. For whatever reason the movie just didn’t click with me as much as I was hoping. Though it’s easy to see why Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Amy Adams got Oscar nods out of it.

--The movie trailers during the game all seemed very loud, very crash-y and very CGI-y. I will say I can’t wait for Super 8. You had me at JJ Abrams and Kyle Chandler.

--Whew it looks like we're avoiding Erik Morales getting demolished by Juan Manuel Marquez. Instead Morales may face Marcos Maidana. Wait, what?

--Remember when Mike Tomlin trotted out Shaun Suisham for a 52-yard field goal after he nearly shanked an extra point and he proceeded to Shaun Suisham the ball? One thing I’m pretty sure of, judging by their kicks this weekend, is Anderson Silva would have made that from 62 yards out. He is a bad, bad man. That front kick came out of freakin’ nowhere considering the inaction up to that point and then BOOM! Goobye Vitor. Hello GSP. Hell yeah.
Also a bad, bad man? Jon Jones. The guy does it all and just demolished Ryan Bader and I expect him to do pretty much the same to Shogun Rua. It was such a cool moment when Joe Rogan told him about his title shot and Bones was equal parts disbelief and excited. Incidentally Jon Jones is a -150 favorite against Shogun if the early lines hold.

--Cris Carter – not a Hall of Famer. Oooookay, NFL Hall of Fame Voting Committee. Keep up the good work. Y’all don’t need any players who’ve been to 8 Pro Bowls, twice been named All-Pro, ranks 3rd in career receptions, 8th in receiving yards, 4th in receiving TDs, and is 26th in yards from scrimmage. How does he not even make it to the final vote?

--Pathetic, Aaron Brooks. Just pathetic. Not as pathetic as standing outside the stadium and watching the Super Bowl on a big screen, but pathetic nevertheless.

--Never saw The White Stripes live, but did see LCD Soundsystem last time they were here which works out well since they’ve retired. Here’s hoping they put their final show at Madison Square Garden in April out on DVD.

--If this season of Justified (starts Wednesday) is half as good as the promos for it have been then we’re in for another great ride. Just wish it wasn’t on opposite Top Chef All-Stars.

--This looks like the definitive story on Phil Simms v. Desmond Howard. Phil Simms calling you “the worst analyst in the country” has to hurt. It’d be like if Joe Buck called you boring.

--Stefaan Engels wants to make you feel lazy. He set a Guinness World Record over the weekend by running in his 365th marathon in 365 days. Showoff.

--Volume II of ESPN’s 30 for 30 comes out May 17th as does the entire Limited Edition Collector’s Set. That bad boy will cost you $150. The second volume has the series’ final 15 films including the best of the best in The Two Escobars. Other favorites of mine in this one include The Birth of Big Air (Mat Hoffman), The Best That Never Was and Once Brothers. I liked all of those more than Pony Excess which is also on this. What I’m saying is Volume II is where it’s at…with the notable exception of the Martina/Chris doc that I couldn’t make it five minutes into.

--Chefs Seth Siegel-Gardner and Hori-san are just killing it at Kata Robata right now. So creative, so detail-oriented and most importantly it all tastes so damn good. Ten words: Tempura wasabi leaf with basil edamame puree and shitake powder. Although I think I’ve reached my limit on this 165 proof White Dog moonshine.

Holy crap, you’ve never had a hangover until you’ve had a White Dog hangover.

--Of course Sean Salisbury announced the Lingerie Bowl over the weekend.

--There’s only one more episode of Friday Night Lights left and that’s a sad, sad thing. If you’re keeping up then this review of the last episode from Alan Sepinwall is worth your time. Perfect review of one helluva episode.
By the way it sounds like Mrs. Coach/Connie Britton is headed to FX for something with David O. Russell, the director from The Fighter.

Tough love - Friday Night Lights style.

  3. Yo-

Dude Justified was on point last night...picked up where last season left off with some new baddies introduced. After watching Winter's Bone...I have a new found respect for the way they (Dixie Mafia?) conduct their crime business in those parts...And just a quick note...for all the notiriety about snitching in the black community and hispanic community...and no disrespect...but those hillbillies take it to whole other level and put everyone else to shame...sorry I have to call it like I see it....those people are on a whole other level when it comes to law enforcement...wow!

I am sure you don't watch Detroit 1-8-7. I think it is a good show with a good cast. Imperioli has impressed me. Plus I feel obligated to watch since that is my hometown. So I am a little bias and yes I ride or die with the Detroit teams as well....
Anyway....Michael K. Williams (Omar Little) is on next weeks episode and might be worth the watch....

  4. Can't wait to get to Justified tonight. "Dixie Mafia" is awesome.

Thanks for the heads up on Michael K. Williams on Detroit 1-8-7 next week. I'll watch. From what I gather I think that show is on the chopping block.
