Don't step out of this house if that's the clothes you're gonna wear. I'll kick you out of my home if you don't cut that hair.

Quick Hitters and Random Thoughts

--No spoilers about this season of Friday Night Lights. I just want to reiterate how much I’m going to miss those people, their relationships, the places they went physically, emotionally and the music that accompanied it all. I’ll also miss Santiago. Well, maybe I'm going too far.

This show may not have been realistic about football and exactly how many last second wins you can have, but it was damn realistic about the relationships in a person’s world whether it be as a parent, friend, teammate, husband or wife. If I’m talking about what show I think was the most brilliant of all-time I’m talking about The Wire. If I’m talking about what show was my favorite of all-time I’m talking about Friday Night Lights.
Texas forever.

--“We Are Your Astros” – I think that kind of speaks for itself.

--The only bad thing about Justified’s premiere? We were limited to only about 10 seconds of Ava/Joelle Carter. Everything else was all good. Damn good.
“I’m going to ask you one question: do you know how a firearm works?”
Margo Martindale and Jeremy Davies/Daniel Faraday from Lost are perfect cast additions. Gonna be a helluva season.

--Say what you will about what the show has become or how much you hate the Jazz, but which is a bigger head scratcher…no Emmy for Steve Carell or no Coach of the Year for Jerry Sloan?

--And with that I think we can say goodbye to Andrei Arlovski and Fedor Emelianenko. Thanks for the memories.

--I’m not exactly sure what a Valentines themed episode of Spartacus would have been like, but I imagine their Sweetheart conversation candies with the likes of “Be-heading Your Way” or “Love You More Than Jupiter’s Cock” would have been fun to read. If I was good at Photoshop or whatever the kids use these days I would totally make a Batiatus Choo-Choo-Chooses You card.

--Miley Cyrus to host SNL. Yeah, that’s about right. I’m no fashion expert, but she had to have the ugliest dress on at The Grammys. Writing of, it’s amazing how much Twitter can elevate the watchability of awards show. I didn’t realize how many people were watching until I tweeted something about Kids Incorporated. Then I realized everyone except the Showtime Sunday series addicts were watching. It seems like I should hate Ryan Seacrest and Justin Bieber, but I just can’t. Though I don’t watch Idol so maybe if I did I’d hate Seacrest. If he’s good enough for Julianne Hough he’s good enough for me.

The best part about Bieber, Jaden Smith and Usher’s performance, beyond the Kid ‘n’ Play moves, was seeing Will mouth the words during his son’s performance. Side note: Best Will Smith movie remains Six Degrees of Separation.
Muse killed it though I was hoping for a different song than "Resistance." One more reason to like Arian Foster was his tweet saying Muse had the best performance and it gained a fan in him. I can’t wait until Muse comes back to Houston.
Lady Gaga didn’t even try to hide the fact that whatever song she was doing was a straight rip-off of Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” I guess she figures she can get more awards that way. It worked for Lady Antebellum, right @fbullington?

Other things I learned while watching The Grammys…
Apparently I like Mumford & Sons.
Usher only knows one song.
There’s such a thing as an “Esperanza Spalding” and apparently she’s talented.
John Legend, even without the SI Swimsuit cover girl on his arm, was still the coolest guy in the room.

Cyndi Lauper was nominated for a Grammy…in 2011.
Maybe it was just my TV, but CBS had problems getting clean audio or opening mics up in time a lot. I guess it doesn’t help when you’re bleeping out half of a song.
Rihanna knows how to dress.
I’m pretty sure I was supposed to be blown away by Arcade Fire, but I wasn’t. And how does it win for Album of the Year and not Alternative Music Album of the Year (Black Keys)?

--Andrea Zuckerman on The Event?!

--It seems like Houston is adding more and more solid food trucks everyday. But we don’t have one that serves sushi burritos like this one. So somebody fix that. Thanks in advance.

--Only four NBA teams who’ve been in multiple overtime games are undefeated in those games. The Jazz, Celtics, Spurs and Cavaliers. So there ya go Cleveland ya got that going for you.

--Community was okay last week, but I should’ve just replayed The Barenaked Ladies (BNL) conversation on a loop for 30 minutes. Well except for the five seconds Alison Brie and Gillian Jacobs almost kissed.
Jeff: "They're 'BNL' now? We need a shorthand for the Barenaked Ladies. That's how fundamental they are."

--The Office made me laugh, which is a nice change. No moment made me laugh more than when Kevin was questioned after claiming he too has had sex in the office.
Angela: “With who?”
Kevin: “She goes to another school.”
The show dragged out Jim and Pam forever until they finally got together, but there was a fun, sweetness to it or maybe just everything about the show was better then. But a man can only take so much of the Erin/Andy/Gabe triangle.

--Public Service Annoucement: HBO documentary The Battle for Marjah premieres Thursday night.

--I'm an unabashed fan of Rocky V so I've always kept track of the ups, downs and crazies of Tommy Morrison. The Kansas City Star goes through all those with Tommy again and he's as crazy as ever. Sad crazy.
There's a fake fight referenced and here's that...

--Portlandia got renewed for a second season which you either like or am ambivalent about. I’m the latter.

--Even a James Franco fan like me knows he’s getting overexposed by the day, but the possibility of Franco playing Kaneda in the live-action Akira works for me. It probably just depends what drugs you’re on while watching Akira anyway.

--Don’t you hate it when you’re trying to steal something and the freakin’ door closes in on you and traps your motorized cart? Ugh, I know it sucks. But that’s what happened to our friend Jerrie (really Jerrie with an “ie”?) Perkins up in Michigan at a Meijer store. She was trying to get away with $600 worth of electronics. Apparently she didn’t take getting caught so well and “took a fighting stance.” Yeah, that’s a tasing.

--Interesting Wall Street Journal article on the upcoming "Modernist Cuisine" book that sounds like Alton Brown’s books on super steroids.

--Gotta love seemingly ageless guys like Kurt Thomas. Only 96 NBA players have ever played 1,000 games and Kurt becomes the 96th this week. K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune with a nice write-up on Kurt.
“Derrick Rose was 6 when the Heat selected Thomas with the 10th overall pick of the 1995 draft.”

--A sincere good luck with that Bayou Place. I just want a theater where tweens and teens don’t run amok 24/7

  1. I've only see The Arcade Fire play a live performance once on Austin City Limits and was pretty impressed. I saw them last night but had the sound turned down. I just want to know how the lead singer gets away with stealing Jimmy Darmody's hairstyle.

I knocked out all of FNL season 5 this weekend. There were a few moments when things got a little dusty in here.

  2. I think this was the second best season of FNL. To change casts, to have all that NBC uncertainty it's amazing the run that show had. I can't imagine any fan not knocking the series out the weekend it's on DVD.

  3. Me and Barry are working on a FNL post and I ranked this season third but I could be convinced to put it ahead of season 3.

  4. Yo-

What do you think the over/under on the body count by Raylan is going to be this season??
Mental note...next time im in that part of the country and someone offers me apple pie or anything to drink I think I will take a pass..now thats how you quietly kill someone...
I think the Playboy Mansion has nothing on the House of Batiatis. I mean seriously those people know how to party and then some. Hated to see Gaia go....her and Lucresha was must see week and week out....Asher is a real asshole...I see why he was not liked to much in Blood and Sand.
You mentioned the Wire above...don't forget Detroit 1-8-7 tonite has Omar....man I miss him whistling on the streets of Baltimore....

  5. Sounds like Raylan wants less paperwork so maybe just 2 kills per episode.

At times in original Spartacus Asher seemed sympathetic but not anymore.

    Thanks for the Detroit reminder.
